Break The Boxes will be sharing the sUM of Poems and Songs that have emerged over the last nine months as a way of finalizing our Founders Fulbright learning exchange trip abroad in Salvador Bahia, Brasil. We will be exploring all five Break The Boxes themes in our poems. Exploring how the arts sustain our souls in the most trying times of our lives.
Sharing a Testimony on the transformative role that Capoeira can play in ones life. And conducting singing activity with 44 youth in the prison system.
Explored elements in Nature connecting to our present moment with students from the School of Dance Contact Improvisation group. 1 hour 30 min workshop incorporating poetic elements and fundamentals of Capoeira movements to heighten our awareness of Self and environment.
BTB partnered with Nacao Capoeira in Cosme de Farias Salvador Bahia, Brasil, to provide Free English classes to youth ages 7 - 18 years old. Twice a week for two months students met for one hour, reviewing basic beginners english words. Student recently completed their collective "I AM" poem, which you can view it on our instagram page. Focusing on building self-confidence through pronunciation.
Break The Boxes performed and co-produced an open mic showcase in support of Kelley Kali's USC Master Thesis Film. We raised over $300 from the event, going to raising awareness of childtrafficking in Haiti. The Lalos House Film went on to win the 2018 Pan African Film Festival.
